Adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase gamma 3 (AMPK γ3)

Target
AMPK γ3
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Protein kinase subunit, Regulatory subunit

Overview

Adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase gamma 3 (AMPK γ3) is a non-catalytic regulatory subunit of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) complex, encoded by the PRKAG3 gene. AMPK is a heterotrimeric enzyme that acts as an energy sensor. The γ3 isoform is predominantly expressed in skeletal muscle and plays a key role in regulating muscle energy metabolism. Mutations in PRKAG3 are linked to altered insulin sensitivity and glycogen storage. AMPKγ3 is a therapeutic target for metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes.
