Overview

Acarus siro fatty acid-binding protein allergen (Aca s 13) is a major storage mite allergen identified in both occupational and nonoccupational settings. It has an approximate molecular weight of ~14–15 kDa and shares significant sequence homology with other dust mite fatty acid-binding proteins such as Blo t 13 from Blomia tropicalis. The recombinant form binds human IgE antibodies from sensitized patients, indicating its clinical relevance in respiratory allergies like rhinitis and asthma. Sensitization rates vary but can be substantial among exposed populations. Other characterized allergens from this species include alpha-amylase (Aca s 4), tropomyosin (Aca s 10), cysteine protease (Aca s 1), serine protease (Aca s 3), glutathione S-transferase (Aca s 8), among others.[1][2][3][4][5] “The predicted amino acid sequence [of Aca s 13] has one potential N-glycosylation site at position 4–6 and a cytosolic fatty-acid binding protein signature at position 5–22… The protein has 64% sequence identity with Blo t 13… The allergen was named Aca s 13.” [1] “Allergens in storage mites are proteins with a variety of functions, including fatty-acid binding proteins... In particular, the allergen Aca s 13 reacted with serum from 23% of patients sensitized to *A. siro*.” [5]
