Acetate ion Overview

The acetate ion is a negatively charged polyatomic ion (anion) with the chemical formula C₂H₃O₂⁻ or CH₃COO⁻. It is the conjugate base of acetic acid. The negative charge is delocalized over the two oxygen atoms due to resonance. Acetates are used as solvents, in manufacturing cellulose acetate, in diapers, as food preservatives, as laboratory reagents, and as astringent/antiseptic agents.
