Target intelligence / Profile preview

Acetylcholine Receptor, Nematode Type B (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), Cys-loop ligand-gated ion channel superfamily, Ligand-gated ion channel, Receptor
01

Overview

The B-type acetylcholine receptor (AChR) in nematodes is a subtype of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), which are pentameric ligand-gated ion channels mediating excitatory neurotransmission at the neuromuscular junctions of nematodes. These receptors are critical for body movement and serve as major pharmacological targets for several classes of anthelmintic drugs. It is preferentially activated by bephenium.

02

Mechanism of action

Activation of the receptor leads to ion channel opening, depolarization, and muscle contraction. Anthelmintics act as agonists or antagonists, disrupting normal neuromuscular function and causing paralysis or death of the nematode.
