The acetylcholine receptor (AChR) at the neuromuscular junction is a neurotransmitter-gated ion channel that converts chemical signals from motor neurons into electrical signals in muscle fibers, leading to muscle contraction. It is a heteropentameric receptor composed of α, β, δ, and either γ (fetal) or ε (adult) subunits. Upon binding acetylcholine, the receptor opens its central pore, allowing cations to flow through and depolarize the muscle membrane. It is the primary target for neuromuscular blocking agents and is implicated in diseases like Myasthenia Gravis.
