An acetylcholinesterase substrate (indirect) refers to any molecule that is acted upon by the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE), but is not itself AChE. The most physiologically relevant substrate for AChE is acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter essential for cholinergic synaptic transmission in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. In research and diagnostics, synthetic analogs such as acetylthiocholine are also commonly used as substrates to study AChE activity.
