Overview

Ultrasound imaging enhancement via acoustic impedance mismatch leverages the physical principle that when an ultrasound wave encounters a boundary between two materials with different acoustic impedances, part of the wave is reflected back. Microbubbles, which have a gas core encapsulated by a shell, create a strong acoustic impedance mismatch with surrounding biological tissues or fluids. This results in pronounced reflection and scattering of ultrasound waves at the microbubble interface, significantly enhancing image contrast and signal-to-noise ratio. The 'target' is the interface between the microbubble gas core and the surrounding liquid or tissue, where the difference in acoustic impedance is maximized for optimal reflectivity.
