"Actin, beta pseudogene" refers not to the functional, protein-coding beta-actin gene but to one of many nonfunctional, processed sequence copies ("pseudogenes") derived from the beta-actin gene found throughout the human genome[1][4][6]. These pseudogenes are numerous and intronless, most often not expressed or translated into functional protein[4]. Therefore, they are not considered a canonical therapeutic target. Beta-actin pseudogenes are noncoding genetic sequences in the human genome derived from the functional beta-actin (ACTB) gene through reverse transcription and integration. They lack introns and do not produce functional protein, and are dispersed across multiple chromosomes[1][4][6]. Their sequence similarity to the functional gene poses challenges for molecular assays such as RT-PCR, as primers may mis-prime pseudogene sequences, leading to potential confounding results[4]. Beta-actin pseudogenes do not belong to recognized receptor, enzyme, ion channel, or transcription factor families, and are generally ignored in therapeutic contexts. Multiple individual loci exist, but none have established roles in disease, therapy, or as biomarkers, and they should not be confused with the functional beta-actin gene (ACTB), which is critical for cytoskeletal function[1][2][4][6]. Summary: "Actin, beta pseudogene" refers to a family of nonfunctional gene copies of the beta-actin gene. They are not suitable as therapeutic targets and complicate molecular genetics experiments due to their high resemblance to the functional gene[4].
