Actin, gamma-enteric smooth muscle is a member of the actin family of cytoskeletal proteins. Encoded by the ACTG2 gene, it is specifically expressed in smooth muscle cells of the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts. This actin isoform is essential for the contractile function of these muscles, thereby regulating bladder emptying and intestinal motility. Pathogenic missense mutations in ACTG2 are linked to disorders such as megacystis-microcolon-intestinal hypoperistalsis syndrome and chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, diseases characterized by severe impairment of smooth muscle contraction. While critical to cellular structure and function, ACTG2 is not a therapeutic target in the conventional sense, due to the essential nature and structural ubiquity of actins in all cells.
