Acyl-coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase 1 (ACAT1)

Target
ACAT1
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Membrane-bound O-acyltransferase (MBOAT) family
01

Overview

Acyl-coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase 1 (ACAT1) is an integral membrane enzyme that catalyzes the formation of cholesteryl esters from cholesterol and long-chain fatty acyl-CoA. It is involved in lipid metabolism, specifically cholesterol storage and transport. ACAT1 is a member of the MBOAT family and is expressed ubiquitously. It plays a role in both ketone body synthesis and breakdown. Mutations in ACAT1 can cause beta-ketothiolase deficiency. It is a therapeutic target for atherosclerosis and Alzheimer's disease.
