Adaptor-related protein complex 4, sigma 1 subunit pseudogene (AP4S1 pseudogene)

Target
AP4S1 pseudogene
Molecular classification
Other (Pseudogene)

Overview

This entry refers to a pseudogene for the sigma 1 subunit of the adaptor protein complex 4. The functional, protein-coding gene (AP4S1) encodes a small subunit of a heterotetrameric complex involved in vesicular trafficking and protein sorting in the endocytic and secretory pathways. However, the pseudogene (ENSG00000220960) does not encode a functional protein and is not involved in these biological processes. The AP4S1 gene mutations can cause rare neurodevelopmental disorders, but the pseudogene itself has no known clinical significance. The biologically active molecule is AP4S1 (adaptor-related protein complex 4, sigma 1 subunit); ENSG00000220960 encodes a pseudogene of AP4S1, not the protein itself. For therapeutic, mechanistic, or biomarker queries, the protein-coding AP4S1 gene should be used—see sources for details on its real functions, disease roles, and pathway involvement.

02

Mechanism of action

None; pseudogenes are not therapeutic targets.

03

Biological functions

None; pseudogenes do not encode a functional protein and thus do not carry out biological functions
04

Disease associations

None; pseudogenes are generally not directly involved in disease mechanisms. (Some pseudogenes may have regulatory roles or altered expression linked to disease, but there is no evidence for this entry.)
