Target intelligence / Profile preview

Adenosine Receptor Antagonism (Caffeine-mediated)

Molecular classification
Receptor Antagonist
01

Overview

Caffeine acts as a central nervous system stimulant primarily through antagonism of adenosine A1 and A2A receptors. This antagonism reduces adenosine's inhibitory effects on neuronal activity, leading to increased alertness, reduced fatigue, and enhanced cognitive performance. While caffeine primarily targets adenosine receptors, at very high doses, it can also affect calcium mobilization and phosphodiesterase inhibition. However, these effects are less relevant at typical dietary doses.
