Adrenergic receptors in the nasal blood vessels, primarily alpha-1 and alpha-2 subtypes, are G protein-coupled receptors that mediate the effects of catecholamines, primarily norepinephrine and epinephrine. They regulate vascular tone in the nasal mucosa, influencing blood flow and congestion. Stimulation of these receptors leads to vasoconstriction, reducing blood flow and relieving congestion. Prolonged use of agonists can lead to rebound congestion.
