Overview

Advanced Platelet-Rich Fibrin (A-PRF) is an autologous, second-generation platelet concentrate produced by centrifuging blood at low speeds without anticoagulants (Ghanaati et al., 2014). It consists of a three-dimensional fibrin matrix that traps platelets, leukocytes, and various cytokines, acting as a bioactive scaffold for tissue regeneration (Miron et al., 2017). A-PRF does not interact with a single molecular target; instead, it facilitates the sustained release of multiple endogenous growth factors, such as Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), Transforming Growth Factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1), and Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF) (Kobayashi et al., 2016). These factors stimulate essential biological processes including angiogenesis, cell proliferation, and extracellular matrix synthesis at the site of injury (Choukroun & Ghanaati, 2018). Clinically, A-PRF is employed in oral surgery, periodontology, and wound management to accelerate healing and enhance bone grafting outcomes (Strauss et al., 2020). As an autologous product, it offers high biocompatibility and a low risk of adverse immune reactions (Dohan Ehrenfest et al., 2009).
