Aerobic Dehydrogenases (Flavoenzymes)

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Oxidoreductase, Flavoenzyme
01

Overview

Aerobic dehydrogenases that are flavoenzymes represent a broad class of enzymes that catalyze oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions using molecular oxygen as the final electron acceptor. These enzymes contain flavin cofactors—either flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) or flavin mononucleotide (FMN)—which are essential for their catalytic activity. The term "aerobic" refers to their use of O₂ in the catalytic cycle, distinguishing them from anaerobic dehydrogenases. They participate in diverse biological processes: oxidation of alcohols and amines, desaturation reactions leading to olefin formation, aromatic hydroxylations, activation and reduction of O₂ for various biosynthetic pathways. These activities place them at critical junctions in metabolic networks such as energy production, detoxification, biosynthesis of natural products, and defense mechanisms in microorganisms.
