Overview

Allobaculum is a genus of Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, strictly anaerobic, and non-motile bacteria in the family Erysipelotrichidae[1]. The genus includes species like Allobaculum stercoricanis, Allobaculum mucolyticum, and Allobaculum fili, some of which are part of the normal mammalian, including human, gut microbiota[1][3][5]. Certain species, particularly Allobaculum mucolyticum, possess a broad repertoire of carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) that degrade intestinal mucin O-glycans, aiding in colonization of the mucosal niche[2][3][5][7]. While some Allobaculum are associated with health benefits such as butyrate production, others—especially newly described species in humans—are implicated in potentially pathogenic mucus layer erosion, immune modulation, and may contribute to inflammatory bowel disease pathogenesis when overabundant or misregulated[3][5][7].
