Overview

Alpha-1,3-galactosyltransferase 2 (A3GALT2) is an enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of galactose from UDP-Galactose to acceptor molecules, involved in the synthesis of isoglobotrihexosylceramide (iGb3) and related glycosphingolipids in some mammals[1][2][3]. However, in humans, the A3GALT2 gene is nonfunctional (a pseudogene), and does not produce an active enzyme, meaning humans do not synthesize iGb3 via this pathway[2][3][4]. Consequently, it is not considered an active therapeutic target or biomarker in humans, though it is studied in other species for its immunological implications, particularly in xenotransplantation research[2][3].
