The Alpha-1D adrenergic receptor (ADRA1D) is a G protein-coupled receptor that plays a pivotal role in the sympathetic nervous system by mediating the actions of norepinephrine and epinephrine (UniProt: P25100). In the context of BPH, ADRA1D is specifically noted for its high expression in the human prostate and bladder neck, contributing to the dynamic component of urinary obstruction. Selective and non-selective antagonists are used clinically to manage these symptoms by reducing muscle tone. Understanding the subtype-specific roles of alpha-1 receptors remains crucial for developing drugs with improved safety profiles and reduced cardiovascular side effects.
