Overview

The alpha-adrenergic receptor subtypes α2A, α2C, α1B, and α1D are members of the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily that respond to catecholamines including noradrenaline and adrenaline. They regulate critical processes like vascular tone, smooth muscle contraction, neurotransmitter release, and central nervous system function. Although structurally related, each subtype differs in tissue localization, physiological roles, and drug selectivity. Drugs targeting these receptors are used to treat cardiovascular, urologic, and neuropsychiatric conditions, with therapeutic challenges including subtype-selective modulation and risk of systemic side effects.
