Alpha-adrenergic receptors in the nasal vasculature are G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) located primarily on the smooth muscle of blood vessels within the nasal mucosa. Their activation leads to vasoconstriction, which reduces blood flow, resulting in shrinkage of the nasal tissue and relief from congestion. The main subtypes relevant to the nasal vasculature are α1-adrenergic receptors, predominantly found on resistance vessels, and α2-adrenergic receptors, present mainly on venous capacitance vessels. Decongestants act as agonists at these receptors to achieve nasal decongestion. Prolonged use, especially topical, can lead to rebound congestion due to receptor desensitization.
