Alpha waves are neural oscillations in the frequency range of 8–12 Hz, typically detected over the occipital and parietal regions using EEG or MEG. They are most prominent during relaxed wakefulness with eyes closed but not asleep. Alpha wave activity is indicative of a resting or idle state, yet more recent research shows a functional role in gating or suppressing irrelevant sensory input during attentional tasks. Alpha waves increase during meditation and other relaxation techniques, and their disturbance may be associated with poor sleep quality or cognitive disorders. Despite their physiological significance, alpha brain waves are not a molecule, receptor, or conventional therapeutic target, but a brain state measurable by electrophysiological technologies.
