Overview

Diamine oxidase (DAO), also known as amine oxidase, copper-containing 1 (AOC1) or histaminase, is an enzyme primarily responsible for the metabolism and inactivation of histamine and other polyamines such as putrescine and spermidine. DAO plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy histamine levels in the body by breaking down excess histamine, particularly that which is ingested through food. Deficiency or reduced activity of DAO leads to accumulation of dietary/exogenous histamine causing symptoms collectively termed "histamine intolerance" or "food/enteral histaminosis".
