Amine oxidase [flavin-containing] A (MAO-A) is a mitochondrial outer membrane-bound flavoenzyme that catalyzes the oxidative deamination of primary and some secondary amines, including key neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. It plays a critical role in regulating neuroactive and vasoactive amines in both the central nervous system and peripheral tissues. MAO-A is a target for antidepressant and anti-anxiety medications.
