Overview

Amyloid beta 40 peptide (Aβ1–40) is a 40-amino acid peptide derived from the amyloid precursor protein (APP) through sequential cleavage by β- and γ-secretases. It is a major component of amyloid plaques found in the brains of Alzheimer's disease patients and plays a critical role in the disease's pathogenesis through neurotoxicity and plaque formation. While having some physiological roles, its pathological aggregation is a key focus for therapeutic intervention. Compared to Aβ1-42, Aβ1-40 has a lower propensity to aggregate and is considered less neurotoxic, but it still contributes to overall amyloid burden and vascular lesions.
