Pseudogenes as a class have been implicated in subtle gene regulatory roles (such as competing endogenous RNA interactions or serving as templates for short interfering RNAs), but no such functions are established for this specific pseudogene. This locus should not be confused with coding genes associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), such as ALS2 (alsin), which are implicated in disease.
