Overview

Aquaporin-1 (AQP1) is a transmembrane protein that functions as a highly selective water channel, facilitating the rapid, passive movement of water molecules across cell membranes in response to osmotic gradients (UniProt P29972). It is constitutively expressed in various tissues, including the red blood cells, renal proximal tubules, and vascular endothelium, where it plays a fundamental role in maintaining fluid homeostasis and concentrating urine (PubMed: 21907144). Beyond its role in water transport, AQP1 has been implicated in cell migration and angiogenesis, making it a target of interest in oncology for inhibiting tumor growth and metastasis (PubMed: 25231067). In clinical contexts, AQP1 dysfunction or over-expression is associated with conditions such as edema, glaucoma, and certain types of cancer (PubMed: 25231067). Therapeutic strategies targeting AQP1 include small-molecule inhibitors and gene-silencing approaches, though achieving high potency and isoform selectivity remains a significant challenge in drug development (PubMed: 21907144). Consequently, AQP1 is considered a promising but difficult-to-target protein for treating fluid-related disorders and metastatic disease. The input name "Aqp1 exon 1 genomic DNA" is considered incorrect as it refers to a specific genomic segment rather than the functional protein target.
