Overview

ARAP1 antisense RNA 2 (ARAP1-AS2) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that is transcribed in the antisense direction relative to the ARAP1 gene. ARAP1-AS2 is primarily localized in the nucleus and can directly interact with ARAP1 mRNA, modulating its expression. It has been shown to be upregulated in human renal proximal tubular (HK-2) cells under high glucose conditions and in diabetic nephropathy, where it promotes cell proliferation, fibrosis, cytoskeletal reorganization, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). ARAP1-AS2 regulates ARAP1, which is implicated in endocytosis, cytoskeleton rearrangement, and membrane receptor trafficking. ARAP1-AS2 is not a protein, enzyme, or traditional therapeutic target, but rather acts as a non-coding regulator implicated primarily in renal and metabolic disease processes. ARAP1-AS2 is not a protein or receptor; it is a non-protein coding RNA. It does not have documented small molecule or biologic drug interactions, nor is it directly targeted by therapeutics as of current literature. Its main research significance is as a disease-associated lncRNA, with possible biomarker utility in the context of diabetic nephropathy.
