Other Names
Arsenic(3+), Arsenic cation (3+), As³⁺, Arsenic III, Arsenite (AsO₃³⁻), Arsenate (AsO₄³⁻)
Disease Roles
Arsenic Ion Overview
The arsenic ion refers to the ionic forms of the element arsenic (As), most commonly encountered as arsenic(3+) (As³⁺). Inorganic forms of the arsenic ion are highly toxic due to their ability to disrupt cellular respiration by inhibiting essential enzymes. Chronic exposure can lead to various health issues including cancer. While historically used as poisons and insecticides, some organoarsenic compounds have medicinal applications.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits enzymes by binding to thiol groups, disrupts ATP production, induces oxidative stress.
Biological Functions
Enzyme inhibition
Disruption of cellular respiration
Oxidative stress induction
Disease Associations
Arsenic poisoning
Cancer
Developmental toxicity
Safety Considerations
