Overview

Ziyuan, scientifically known as Aster tataricus L. f. (Tatarian Aster), is a medicinal herb widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its potent effects on respiratory conditions. It is not a single molecular target or receptor but rather a complex botanical drug source containing diverse bioactive constituents, including the characteristic triterpene shionone, cyclic peptides called astins, and various aster saponins. Ziyuan exerts its therapeutic effects through multi-target mechanisms, most notably the inhibition of the NF-kappaB and NLRP3 inflammasome signaling pathways, which reduces the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-alpha. Additionally, components of Ziyuan like kaempferol and aurantiamide have been shown to activate the beta-2 adrenergic receptor, contributing to its clinical use as a bronchodilator for asthma and chronic bronchitis. Modern research highlights its potential in managing acute lung injury, sepsis, and viral pneumonia by regulating pathways such as ECM1/STAT5 and directly neutralizing bacterial toxins like pneumohaemolysin.
