The ATP-sensitive potassium channel (KATP) in arterial smooth muscle is a hetero-octameric ion channel composed of Kir6.x and SURx subunits. It couples cellular metabolism to membrane potential and vascular tone. Activation leads to vasodilation, while inhibition promotes vasoconstriction. It is implicated in cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and diabetes-related vascular dysfunction.
