Overview

ATP synthase subunit s, mitochondrial (ATP5S, also known as distal membrane arm assembly component 2 like, DMAC2L, or ATP synthase coupling factor B) is a protein subunit of the mitochondrial ATP synthase (Complex V) complex[1][3][5][9]. ATP synthase catalyzes the synthesis of ATP utilizing the proton gradient established across the mitochondrial inner membrane during oxidative phosphorylation[2][3][5][10]. The subunit s (factor B) is required for the proper energy transduction activity of the enzyme's Fo proton channel, contributing to the coupling of proton transport to ATP synthesis and overall structural assembly of the ATP synthase complex[3][8]. While ATP synthase dysfunction is implicated in multiple mitochondrial and degenerative diseases, specific roles of subunit s in pathology remain under investigation. Mutations or altered expression in ATP synthase structural subunits can impair mitochondrial energy production and may contribute to disorders of metabolism and potentially neurodegeneration[4][6][10].
