Overview

Avian encephalomyelitis virus (AEV) is a small, non-enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the genus Tremovirus within the family Picornaviridae [1]. It is the etiological agent of avian encephalomyelitis, a disease characterized by central nervous system dysfunction, including ataxia and tremors, primarily in young chickens, turkeys, and other gallinaceous birds [2]. The virus exhibits a dual tropism, initially replicating in the gastrointestinal tract before disseminating to the brain and spinal cord [3]. Transmission occurs both horizontally through the fecal-oral route and vertically through the egg, leading to significant economic losses in the poultry industry due to mortality in chicks and decreased egg production in layers [4]. While there are no specific small-molecule antiviral drugs currently used to treat AEV, the virus is the primary target of live-attenuated and inactivated vaccines administered to breeder flocks to ensure the transfer of protective maternal antibodies [5].
