Overview

Avian influenza virus antigens are the structural and non-structural proteins of avian influenza viruses (AIV) that elicit host immune responses and serve as primary targets for therapeutic and prophylactic interventions (CDC, 2023). The most critical antigens are the surface glycoproteins, Hemagglutinin (HA) and Neuraminidase (NA), which define the viral subtype and are the main focus of vaccine development (WHO, 2024). HA mediates viral entry by binding to host sialic acid receptors, while NA facilitates the release of new virions by cleaving these receptors (NCBI, 2022). Other important antigenic targets include the M2 ion channel, involved in viral uncoating, and the polymerase complex (PA, PB1, PB2) responsible for viral replication (UniProt, 2024). Drugs such as oseltamivir and baloxavir marboxil target these specific antigenic functions to reduce viral load and disease severity (StatPearls, 2023). However, the high rate of antigenic drift and shift in these proteins poses significant challenges for long-term vaccine efficacy and the development of drug resistance (PubMed, 2021).
