Overview

B-cell receptors (BCRs) specific for Enterovirus 71 (EV71) capsid epitopes are membrane-bound immunoglobulins on B lymphocytes that mediate the recognition of the EV71 virus. These receptors primarily target epitopes on the viral capsid proteins VP1, VP2, and VP3, which are essential for viral entry and assembly (PubMed: 25122781). Binding of the viral antigen to the BCR on naïve B cells initiates a signaling cascade that results in B-cell activation, clonal expansion, and the eventual production of neutralizing antibodies (Janeway's Immunobiology). This process is fundamental to the protective immune response against EV71, the primary causative agent of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), which can lead to severe neurological and systemic complications in children (PubMed: 24571725). In drug and vaccine development, these receptors are the focus of strategies aimed at eliciting robust and long-lasting humoral immunity.
