Target intelligence / Profile preview
B-cell receptors (BCRs) specific for HIV-1 Gag p24 epitopes are specialized membrane-bound immunoglobulins located on the surface of B lymphocytes that specifically recognize the p24 capsid protein of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1). The p24 protein is a highly conserved and abundant structural component of the viral core, making it a significant target for the host's humoral immune response (PubMed: 25140444). When these BCRs bind to p24 epitopes, they initiate signaling cascades that lead to B-cell proliferation and the secretion of anti-p24 antibodies. While these antibodies are generally non-neutralizing because the capsid is sequestered within the viral envelope, they are crucial indicators of the immune system's attempt to control the infection and are used extensively in diagnostic testing (PubMed: 11589534). Therapeutic vaccines, such as Vacc-4x, are designed to stimulate these p24-specific B-cell and T-cell responses to reduce viral load and improve clinical outcomes in patients (PubMed: 21334332). Understanding the interaction between these receptors and p24 is vital for developing immunotherapies aimed at achieving a functional cure for HIV.
