CD80 (B7.1) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on antigen-presenting cells (APCs) and activated T cells. It functions as a co-stimulatory molecule crucial for T-cell activation and immune regulation. CD80 interacts with CD28 to deliver a stimulatory signal and with CTLA-4 (CD152) to deliver an inhibitory signal, thereby modulating immune responses. This pathway plays a critical role in initiating primary immune responses, maintaining peripheral tolerance, and regulating autoimmunity through immune checkpoint inhibition mechanisms.
