Overview

Bacteria that act as wound pathogens are a diverse group of microorganisms capable of colonizing and infecting wounds, leading to delayed healing, local tissue damage, and sometimes systemic infection. These bacteria can be aerobic or anaerobic and often originate from the skin, mucosal surfaces, or the environment. Common species include Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis, Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Streptococcus pyogenes. Pathogenic mechanisms include adherence to host tissues, production of toxins, and formation of biofilms. Many common wound pathogens exhibit multidrug resistance, posing challenges for effective treatment.

Mechanism of action

Antibiotics target bacterial cell wall synthesis, protein synthesis, DNA replication, or other essential bacterial processes. Antiseptics disrupt bacterial cell membranes and denature proteins.
