The bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit is the larger component of the prokaryotic 70S ribosome, essential for protein synthesis. It primarily consists of 23S and 5S rRNAs and about 31 distinct proteins. Its main function is to catalyze peptide bond formation during translation. The peptidyl transferase center within the 23S rRNA is a key target for antibiotics.
