Bacterial adhesins, such as fimbriae (or attachment pili), are filamentous protein structures on the bacterial cell surface that mediate adhesion to host tissues or abiotic surfaces. They are crucial for bacterial colonization, biofilm formation, and initiation of infection. Fimbriae are composed of repeating pilin subunits and often have a specialized adhesive tip that recognizes specific receptors on host cells. Examples include Type 1 FimH adhesin, S-fimbria (Sfa), and P-fimbrium (Pap).
