Bacterial Cell Wall (via Oxidative Damage) (BCW)

Target
BCW
Molecular classification
Cell Wall Component, Peptidoglycan, Teichoic Acid, Lipopolysaccharide (LPS, in Gram-negative bacteria)
01

Overview

The bacterial cell wall is a complex structure essential for bacterial survival, providing shape, protection, and structural integrity. Oxidative damage, caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS), targets the cell wall's components, leading to lipid peroxidation, protein carbonylation, and disruption of peptidoglycan cross-links. Bacteria possess defense mechanisms against ROS, but these can be overwhelmed by excessive ROS production or inhibited by specific agents, making the cell wall a vulnerable target for antimicrobial strategies. Many antibiotics and novel pro-oxidant agents exploit this vulnerability to induce cell death.
