Bacterial Ribosome (30S Subunit) (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
Ribonucleoprotein, Ribosomal subunit
01

Overview

The bacterial ribosome is a large ribonucleoprotein complex responsible for protein synthesis in prokaryotic cells. The 30S subunit plays a central role in decoding messenger RNA (mRNA) and ensuring translational fidelity. It consists of one molecule of 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and twenty-one distinct ribosomal proteins (S1-S21). It binds mRNA, tRNAs, and initiation factors to position the start codon correctly for translation. Many antibiotics target bacterial translation by binding specifically to sites on or near functional centers within the 30S subunit.
