Basigin (also known as extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer) (CD147)

Basigin (CD147) is a heavily glycosylated type I transmembrane glycoprotein and member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, also known as HAb18G, EMMPRIN, and TCSF[1][3][7]. It is widely expressed but reaches especially high levels on tumor cells. CD147 regulates extracellular matrix remodeling mainly by stimulating matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and is essential for tumor proliferation, invasion, metastasis, angiogenesis, and immune evasion[1][4][3][6][7]. It also regulates monocarboxylate and amino acid transporters, linking cancer metabolism to the tumor microenvironment. CD147 serves as a prognostic marker and therapeutic target in several cancers, and is under active investigation for antibody- and cell-based therapies. It also plays roles in infection (e.g., as a cofactor in SARS-CoV cell entry) and in immune regulation, making it a multifunctional receptor with broad pathological significance[8][3][4].
