Beta-(1,3)-D-glucan synthase is a membrane-bound enzyme complex that catalyzes the synthesis of beta-(1,3)-D-glucan, a major structural polysaccharide in the fungal cell wall. This enzyme is essential for fungal cell wall integrity and viability and serves as a critical pharmacological target for antifungal drugs. It plays a central role in constructing the fungal cell wall, division septum deposition during cytokinesis, and ascospore wall assembly. Inhibition of this enzyme leads to weakened or lysed fungal cells due to compromised structural support. Blood assays measuring circulating (1→3)-β-D-glucans are used as diagnostic tools for invasive or disseminated fungal infections.
