Overview

Beta-1,3-galactosyltransferase 2 (B3GALT2) is a membrane-bound enzyme belonging to the glycosyltransferase family that catalyzes the transfer of galactose from UDP-galactose to substrates with terminal beta-N-acetylglucosamine residues, thereby participating in the biosynthesis of carbohydrate chains on glycoproteins and glycolipids[1][8]. It plays a critical role in N-linked glycoprotein glycosylation and is involved in important cellular processes such as glycosaminoglycan metabolism and blood group antigen biosynthesis[1][8]. Mutations or dysfunction in the gene have been associated with rare disorders such as cornea plana and hyperparathyroidism, but the protein is not currently a major direct drug target and has limited evidence for clinical biomarker use[1][7][8].
