Bacillus beta-glucosidase is a glycoside hydrolase enzyme produced by various species of the Bacillus genus, most notably Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus polymyxa. It plays a critical role in the final step of cellulose degradation by hydrolyzing cellobiose and other short-chain cello-oligosaccharides into glucose. In the context of human health, bacterial beta-glucosidases within the gastrointestinal tract are involved in the metabolism of dietary glycosides and xenobiotics, often converting them into more bioactive or potentially toxic aglycones.
