Beta-lactamase (Ambler class A) enzymes are a family of serine-based enzymes produced by bacteria that confer resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. They hydrolyze the beta-lactam ring of these antibiotics, rendering them inactive. Class A beta-lactamases include penicillinases, cephalosporinases, and extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) such as TEM, SHV, and CTX-M types, as well as carbapenemases like KPC. These enzymes are a major cause of antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative bacteria.
Hydrolyzes the beta-lactam ring of beta-lactam antibiotics, preventing them from binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
