Beta-Lactamase (Ambler class C) (AmpC)

Target
AmpC
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Serine-based β-Lactamase
01

Overview

Beta-lactamases are enzymes produced by bacteria that confer resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics by hydrolyzing the beta-lactam ring. Ambler class C beta-lactamases (AmpC) are a major group and play a significant role in antibiotic resistance among Gram-negative bacteria. They hydrolyze penicillins, cephalosporins, and cephamycins but are poorly inhibited by clavulanate and tazobactam. Their expression can be chromosomal or plasmid-mediated and may be inducible, complicating treatment strategies.
