Beta-lactamases are enzymes produced by bacteria that confer resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics by hydrolyzing the beta-lactam ring of these drugs. Ambler Class D beta-lactamases, also known as oxacillinases, are serine-based enzymes that primarily hydrolyze penicillins and cloxacillin, but some members can also hydrolyze cephalosporins or carbapenems. They are a significant cause of antibiotic resistance, particularly in pathogens like Acinetobacter baumannii and Enterobacteriaceae.
