Beta-lactamases are enzymes produced by bacteria that confer resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics by hydrolyzing the beta-lactam ring, rendering these drugs ineffective. Class A and Class C beta-lactamases are serine-based enzymes that hydrolyze penicillins, cephalosporins, monobactams and carbapenems (to varying degrees depending on the enzyme type). Class A beta-lactamases are often inhibited by clavulanic acid, tazobactam, and sulbactam, whereas class C beta-lactamases are generally not inhibited by these classic inhibitors, but avibactam may inhibit some AmpC enzymes. The presence of these enzymes complicates treatment choices for serious infections caused by resistant Gram-negative bacteria.
