Overview

Beta-lactamase (TEM-type) refers to a family of enzymes, most notably TEM-1, that are among the most prevalent plasmid-encoded beta-lactamases found in Gram-negative bacteria. These enzymes confer resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics by hydrolyzing the beta-lactam ring, thereby deactivating the antibiotic's bactericidal properties. TEM-type beta-lactamases account for up to 90% of ampicillin resistance in E. coli and contribute significantly to resistance seen in Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, among others. Their spread has led directly to increased prevalence of multidrug-resistant infections.
